Case study: The new Jewel House at the Tower of London
(October 1993 to February 1994)
All materials were tested to ensure they were of conservation quality for the new cases. This applied to everything from zinc plated screws and staples to the fabric coverings and ply backboards.

Display mounts for each item in the crown jewel collection were made. Mounts had to be capable of allowing secure removal of jewels for ceremonial occasions. Each mount was gilded to match the colour of the gold in the crown jewels.

Each object was installed and mounted into new cases, which had been specially made and prepared.

Mounting and display
A well designed mount not only enhances an object but also protects it from the hazards of handling and display. Plowden & Smith designs and make mounts and bases to suit all sizes of objects and situations.

Plowden & Smith designs and constructs custom built security alarms and environment controlled show cases.
