The workshop employs over forty staff with specialist skills ranging from those with degrees and specialist training in conservation to silversmiths, ceramists, stone carvers and cabinet makers. Between them staff at Plowden & Smith are qualified to work on virtually any object. Staff keep up to date with new advances in conservation. They are encouraged to attend conferences on specialist subjects and attend training courses. New techniques are researched in the workshop which maintains close links with leading training colleges and museum laboratories. Most objects are worked on at the Company's premises in London but a mobile workshop and site team are available for conservation and exhibition projects in the United Kingdom and world-wide.
As the largest independent employer of trained conservators, Plowden & Smith is able to offer clients a complete conservation and restoration service. Plowden & Smith advises on preventive conservation and environmental control and is able to develop long-term care programmes.
